Road Safety
Parents are asked to observe the no-parking areas on either side of the school crossing and to encourage children to use the crossing correctly at all times. Please do not call your child across the road to you.
Please note: Bus zones must not be used as drop off or collection points for children.
School Crossing
Supervisors and crossings are provided to keep your child safe. Parents should encourage their children to understand and learn the rules, and always use the crossings when they are ‘manned’ by the supervisors. Please talk to the supervisors so that you know the rules as well as your child. Take your child over the crossing several times to teach him/her how to use it and explain its importance. The school crossings in McKenzie Street and Ogilvie Avenue are operated daily from 8.20am-9.00am and 3.10pm-3.35pm. Children should not be at these crossings before these times. If children do arrive early they MUST wait for the crossing supervisor.
All children living north of Ogilvie Avenue must use the Ogilvie Avenue school crossing at all times.
Cars must not pull up to pick up or let out children in the School Crossing Zone.
Pedestrians must not cross on any portion of the road within 20 metres.
Bike Riding Similar rules apply to scooters.
There are a large number of children who ride bikes to school and we are concerned with their safety. Children are required to wear an approved helmet and to know and use basic road and safety rules. It is essential to remember Traffic Authorities recommend no child younger than eight years be allowed to ride on the road as their vision is not sufficiently developed.
We have a Bike Education program in the school but parental instruction and concern is absolutely essential if we are to guard against accidents.
Bike racks that will hold most bikes are provided in a locked enclosure in the grounds and should be used. It is strongly recommended that all bikes be locked up by their owners in the bike racks.
Please note that riding in the school grounds is not permitted for safety reasons. Children must wheel their bike or scooter to and from the Ogilvie Avenue crossing, or if staying on the south side of Ogilvie Avenue, they must wheel their bike to the corner of McKenzie Street. Children under 12 years are now allowed to ride on footpaths providing they use common sense.
Bus Travelling
There are a number of bus services bringing children to and from school. At the end of each day children are supervised to ensure they leave school safely.
A bus list is checked off so we know which children are on the bus at the end of the day. If your child is not going on the bus the class teacher needs to be informed.
